Abrasion Lesions: Causes, Symptoms, and Remedies

What is an abrasion lesion?

An abrasion lesion refers to an abnormal loss of a tooth’s surface, such as indentations along the tooth’s bottom part.

Abrasion lesions may be caused by:

  • Applying too much force when brushing teeth (over a long period of time)
  • The use of hard-bristles when brushing teeth
  • Incorrect use of dental floss or toothpicks
  • Chewing on or placing hard objects between teeth such as pens or pencils
  • Consumption of highly acidic foods or drinks
  • Forceful chewing
  • Objects which rub against the teeth, such a lip piercing
  • Ill fitted dental clasps on dentures
  • Poorly fitted porcelain teeth

If you notice a v-shaped groove along your gum line where the gum meets the tooth, you likely have an abrasion lesion. Abrasion lesions can worsen, causing the tooth’s structure to become compromised as dentin, pump, and nerves deteriorate. Lesions can cause severe pain when the damaged area is touched. Lesions may be tricky to detect as the tooth may appear healthy at first glance, hiding deeper issues.

Any restorations causing abrasions should be corrected so that the fit does not further compromise the health of the natural tooth or your overall oral health.

Fillings can be made to match natural teeth. These fillings will cover and correct the indentions on the tooth. If gums recession has occurred, surgical procedures can correct this issue.

You can prevent future development by breaking habits which lead to the indentions. You can alter your toothbrush and brushing habits, stop chewing tobacco, quit smoking, and avoid the use of highly abrasive teeth whitening toothpaste.

Abrasions can cause pain and cavities, so you should seek treatment as soon as you notice the  presence of an abrasion.
