Braces

Straightening Teeth for Children and Adults

Braces are the most common and effective way to solve a range of alignment issues.  Overcrowding of teeth, gaps between teeth, overbite, underbite, and crossbite are the most common reasons why braces are given.  If your teeth are misaligned, it can lead to other dental issues and can affect your smile, thus lowering your confidence.  Misaligned teeth can impact nutrition and can at times, be harder to clean and floss.  Tooth decay, gum disease and even tooth loss can occur from badly misaligned teeth.  Braces can restore your smile and will straighten your teeth leaving you proud of your smile and healthy.

Types of Braces

We can offer you various types of braces.  They are made to slowly shift your teeth into the correct position, back into alignment.  The different types are:

  1. Metal Braces – these are the traditional type of braces. They are popular, least expensive but just as effective.  They are made by bonding metal brackets to the teeth in which wires are attached connecting the brackets together.  The wires are tightened upon every visit.  This helps the teeth slowly move into the correct position until they are perfectly aligned.  Depending on the condition of your teeth and depending on where the corrections need to be made, the period to wear them lasts between 6 to 30 months.

Young patients in particular enjoy metal braces, for they can choose different band colors as a fashion statement.  Colors can be changed by the patient at each visit, in which the braces are adjusted and tightened.  There are several color combinations that we carry, especially for our young ones.

  1. Porcelain Braces – these braces are made from a special material that matches the color of your teeth, giving you a more discreet look. The wires are also clear making it even less recognizable.  They generally function the same as metal braces and also require tightening upon visits.  The teeth slowly shift back in to alignment perfectly, which resolves any gaps, crooked teeth and overcrowding.  If you would like braces that are less visible, the porcelain braces are a great alternate to the metal braces.
  2. Invisalign® Aligners – the most effective and virtually invisible method to resolving alignment issues are the Invisalign® Aligners. They are individually crafted clear aligners that slip over your teeth, with no use of wires like braces.  They build slowly to shift teeth properly.  If you are interested to learn more about Invisalign® Aligners, we will take the time to evaluate if you are a candidate.  We would love to hear from you soon.

After Your Braces Are Removed

It is common for most people to receive retainers for a period of time, after braces are removed.  The retainers are meant to keep the teeth aligned by firmly anchoring the teeth in the bone because your teeth have been moving.  Dr. Barkhordar will determine how long you’ll need the retainer and provide you the information about how long you’ll need to continue using them, which may be for several months or longer, depending on your condition.  Along with Dr. Barkhordar, we at Downey Dental Care will help you achieve perfect aligned teeth by offering the best method for you.
