Gum disease affects people of all ages, and is often tackled with a deep cleaning.
How Does a Deep Cleaning Work?
A deep cleaning targets areas below the gum line, which is something a routine cleaning cannot do. Deep cleanings remove bacteria, tartar, and any other debris that may have gotten wedged below the gum line, potentially leading to gum disease. Since a regular, routine cleaning cannot reach below the gum line, if it is left untreated, multiple issues can start to develop including bone loss and loosening of teeth. Deep cleanings are included with gum irrigation with special rinses and antibiotics that rid the bacteria causing the issues.
Do I Need Deep Gum Cleaning?
During your evaluation at Downey Dental Arts, we can check the condition of your gums. We will identify any “gum pockets.” The pockets are deep spaces between gums where plaque and tartar typically accumulate.
We would use a dental probe to measure the depth of the tissue that is currently between your teeth and gums. The spaces are carefully examined, as gum disease can develop anywhere. Healthy gums are measured between 1 and 3 mm in depth. If the spaces are larger, it is important to treat those areas quickly to avoid infection. Dr. Barkhordar may advise on a deep cleaning to clean up the damage and prevent further developmental risks to your health. If you have gum disease, we have the answers to help you right away. We will need to address the situation immediately as many complications follow. We are here to help you protect the health of your natural teeth.
Deep Cleaning: What to Expect
Another common term for a deep gum cleaning is “scaling” or “root planing.” We focus on your oral health and most of all, your comfort and safety. We will numb your gums to avoid pain or any discomfort throughout the cleaning. We used modern, high-tech tools available, making the process even smoother for everyone. One of our skilled and friendly dental hygienists will use a special ultrasonic device to remove plaque and tartar accumulation under the gum line.
After Treatment Care
It is important to prevent recurrence of inflammation after your deep cleaning is finished. By brushing twice daily, flossing and rinsing will ensure further issues to develop. Depending on the condition of your gums and teeth, we may recommend for you to come in more frequently than just twice a year to maintain your overall oral health and to monitor your teeth and gums.
