Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are used to restore function and appearance of a fully complete smile for patients missing a single tooth or multiple teeth. Prosthetic teeth are created to fill gaps left by missing teeth. Crowns placed on your healthy natural teeth are used to anchor the bridge in place. We tailor each prosthetic to match your unique smile in color, size, and alignment. The result is a long-lasting, naturally-looking solution that will last for years.

The Advantages of Dental Bridges

Bridges not only restore the look of your smile. They can better your oral health and improve comfort. Here are a few of the advantages bridges offer:

  • Correction of bite issues, including damage resulting from improper bite
  • Enhanced appearance of smile and face
  • A natural-looking smile
  • Durable results that last for years

Types of Bridges

The type of bridge used depends on the unique needs of the patient. Dr. Barkhordar and his team will discuss the benefits of each bridge and help you decide which provides you with the best results. Downey Dental Arts offers three types of bridges: the traditional bridge, Maryland bonded bridge, and cantilever bridge.

Traditional bridges :

Crowns or implants are used to anchor the bridge in place.

 Maryland bonded bridges:

Instead of crowns, resin is used to bond either metal or porcelain wings to your natural teeth. Maryland bonded bridges are often recommended for patients who can benefit from less natural tooth loss.

Cantilever bridges:

a cantilever bridge can use a single natural tooth as an anchor. This is ideal for patients who have only one natural tooth available next to the gap.

Length of Treatment

Because bridges must be placed in stages, it takes several visits to complete treatment. These visits are scheduled over the course of several months.

During the initial visit, we prepare your natural teeth for the application of either the wings or crowns depending on the type of dental bridge used. We will also make impressions of your mouth to craft a perfect-fitting bridge that will fit comfortably and blend with your natural teeth. Before the end of this first visit, Dr. Barhordar will place a temporary bridge with prosthetic teeth so that you do not leave with an incomplete smile or risk damaging any prep work to natural teeth.

X-rays and a CT scan are used to ensure you have sufficient healthy bone for the placement of implants. The implants are given a time of several months to heal. During this time, implants fuse to the bone in a process called osseointegration. This fusion provides a reliable foundation for your bridge.

Once osseointegration is complete, the bridge is installed. Implants anchor prosthetic teeth in place while the crowns which frame the gap provide extra support.
