A dental crown can correct the appearance of and provide extra protection for an imperfect natural tooth. Dental crowns, also called caps, are placed over the imperfect tooth, giving your smile an enhanced, but natural appearance. With proper care, caps can last for more than a decade.
Advantages of Dental Crowns
A dental crown may be used to:
- Transform your smile
- Strengthen and protect a natural tooth
- Support a dental bridge
With proper care, crowns can last as long as 15 years. Good dental hygiene is the key to maintaining the health of both your crown and your natural teeth. To avoid damaging your crown, you should not grind your teeth, bite your nails, or chew on hard objects (including ice).
How long does it take to place a dental crown?
Dr. Barkhordar can place a crown in a s little as just two visits to our Downey office.
First, the natural tooth is prepped for placement. X-rays let us see if any damage, such as decay or infection, puts your tooth and oral health at risk. If the tooth lacks sufficient health for placing the crown, a corrective treatment such as a root canal may be used to improve your oral health. Special materials may also be applied to provide a sturdy foundation for your cap.
The existing tooth is then filed down and reshaped to provide a secure, lasting fit when the crown is placed. Following the reshaping of the tooth, an impression is taken in order to craft a custom crown that will blend seamlessly with your natural smile. It takes between two and three weeks to finish making your permanent crown. Before you leave the office, a temporary cap will be placed to protect your tooth and enhance the cosmetics of your smile.
Once your crown is finished, Dr. Barkhordar will permanently affix the crown to your tooth.
We use a numbing agent or anesthetic during all necessary procedures to ensure your comfort and eliminate pain. Once your crown is placed, you can enjoy the benefits of your beautiful, healthy teeth for years to come.
