When tooth decay advances or spreads, it will affect the softer tissue (pulp) and nerves in the tooth, causing discomfort. In these situations, a root canal is the process employed to fully resolve the problem and will help avoid the need for tooth extraction. Root canals cure teeth infected by deep decay can save you from losing your natural teeth.
Root Canal Treatment: What to Expect
Our dentist will need to diagnose your condition prior to performing a root canal. You will be x-rayed during the first visit to identify the areas of infection accurately and the severity of the issue. We can create a customized treatment plan for you once the x-ray images are complete which will resolve your dental issue.
Your root canal procedure is typically scheduled after the full evaluation is complete. You are first, numbed in the infected area with a local anesthetic to prevent pain or discomfort during treatment. A rubber barrier/dam is placed around the tooth being treated to prevent moisture from entering the area during the process. The specialized dental tool will then be drilled, removing all decay, bacteria and affected pulp. Afterwards, a dental liquid is injected directly into the tooth which clears away debris.
At this stage, the area is sealed. Dr. Barkhordar places a dental compound and sealing paste inside the root of the tooth and then he will fill the upper area of the tooth with a composite filling which matches the natural color of your teeth. There are some cases in which the infection is still active. This is resolved prior to sealing and filling to tooth. A specific dental medication will be injected into the infected tooth area and a temporary filling will be placed to guard the area. The next visit, your tooth will be ready to seal.
A crown may be required to restore the tooth once the root canal is sealed, as much of the upper area of the tooth may need to be removed if the condition was badly decayed. All treatment plans and options will be discussed with your prior to any procedure. Our professionals are more than happy to answer any and all questions you may have about root canals or any other dental procedure.
